Kensington, London (KEN - 0808)
This position is not currently available.
A Tutor is required to work primarily with a 14 year old boy. The student is attending an American school on the outskirts of West London. The Tutor will work after school, Sunday to Thursday, ensuring that schoolwork is fully understood and that homework is complete. This is a long-term position, and it is hoped that the same Tutor will be available for several years. The position commences in late August 2008.
Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Student(s)

The student is a nice boy, well behaved, with a lovely demeanour. He is determined and well disciplined, and the family place high value on academic diligence. In the last two years at the American school his grades have been good, especially in mathematics. He is organized and diligent. He has no behavioural issues and willingly does his homework. Areas to focus on include writing, reading, speaking and vocabulary.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will work after school from around 4pm each day Sunday-Thursday reviewing daily schoolwork and helping the student to complete his homework on time and correctly. The Tutor will also ensure that the student is properly prepared for quizzes, tests, and projects, across all his grade 8 subjects, together with the organisational support this entails.

His school is a mainstream private school with highly motivated students and high academic standards. Classes are of moderate size (10-15 students normally) and interaction with teachers is straightforward. The school is used to its students having private tutors.

The boy’s sister, who is two years older, may also seek advice from the Tutor about her work during the evening. The girl is artistic and creative, and does well in school.

On days when homework is light, or on occasions where the opportunity presents itself, the Tutor should enjoy taking the boy outdoors to play/learn or just to play. Although he likes football and basketball, visits to museums, art galleries, and sites of interest should also be included. A car is available to the Tutor for this purpose, and is therefore essential the Tutor have a clean driving license.

Other Aspects

The Tutor will typically work from 4pm until the student’s homework is complete, and everything is ready for the next day. The Tutor will also be aware of longer assignments and help ensure that these are planned in advance and completed on time. It is expected that the Tutor will average 15-20 hours per week. With reasonable notice, there may be occasions when the Client asks the Tutor to come in earlier, or stay later than usual. It is not expected that these variations will meet with resistance from the Tutor, or incur an additional charge, unless they become frequent or significant.

Vacation entitlement is nine weeks paid holiday per annum.

This position is non-residential. There may be occasions when the Tutor is asked to accompany the family on vacation; in such circumstances the Client will cover the Tutor’s expenses.

This position would suit either a male or female teacher who is fit and enjoys sports, and has a happy and pleasant demeanour. The Tutor should be a non-smoker.

Travel, Term and Fees

The Client will reimburse to the Tutor the cost of an annual season ticket for London public transport. Travel at 40p per mile will be reimbursed if the Tutor prefers to use his or her own car. In addition, the Client will make a car available to the Tutor for local excursions.

This position is for one year initially. The fees for this position will be £26,400 paid to the Tutor.
