Students
The boy is academically able (measured IQ in the 140s). He has an inquisitive mind and relishes intellectual challenges. Currently he is enrolled in an online high school following the US system. He is taking classes in Pre-Calculus, Physics, and Economics, as well as Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Spanish and French Language (May 2008), and Calculus (May 2009). In addition he receives instruction in Chinese, and is planning to take the AP Chinese exam in May 2009. Enrolment in the online school means that he can work through material at a far greater rate than his peers, and if all goes according to plan he should be able to graduate with an excellent GPA and to be accepted to a first rate college or university in the United States. It was this ambition that was a factor in the change from an IB school, allowing him to focus his efforts more directly on the final target.
He has been diagnosed with ADD, and whilst he demonstrates some of the characteristics that one might attribute to this condition, there is a palpable sense that much of his behaviour is derived from a lack of motivation. One source of this may be the quality of teaching at his IB school, which was at times lacklustre. Now that he is has control of his own rate of learning, the effects of this should diminish.
On a social level, he has an easygoing and pleasant character and is unfailingly polite, with a down-to-earth persona and a good sense of humour. He can appear highly confident, but this confidence is often misplaced. He needs to develop more maturity.
Outside of school, he has a keen interest in the outdoors and individual sports, such as scuba diving, snow sports, and squash. Music is also a passion of his and he enjoys playing the guitar and drums with a particular emphasis on rock and heavy metal. In terms of his future, the world of business is his passion and it is hoped that he might go on to study at a top business school such as Wharton or Stern.
The family’s daughter is also very able, but unlike her brother, she has no difficulty in organising her time. Her work is always done to a high standard and in a timely fashion. The only subject of concern is science, and the tutor may occasionally be asked to assist with this.
Role of the Tutor
The Tutor will support him through all of his classes, ensuring that all assignments are turned in on time and are complete. This may involve both tutoring and cooperative learning with him. During the day, he works from a specially designated and well-resourced classroom at his father’s city center offices. The successful candidate will need to develop professional working relationships with his teachers and with the employees of his father’s companies.
The family is looking for an individual who can act as a mentor for their son. They want someone who exhibits the characteristics that they would like to develop in their boy: a love of learning and lofty ambitions; good time-management and strong exam technique. They feel that by having an educational role model, their son will grow to be the best that he can be. This also carries through to extra-curricular activities, and so it will be of great advantage if the Tutor has some similar interests and passions to the boy’s. The family also has firm principles on a number of issues – they practice sobriety at home and they embrace all religions without practicing any. Any candidate for this job would have to be sensitive to, and respectful of, such principles.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
A typical day for him will cover the whole period, from 9am - 5.30pm. This extended and intensive working day should mean that there is rarely any reason for him to have any homework in the evenings.
The paid vacation entitlement is at least nine weeks per annum. It is likely that the majority of this will be taken during the children’s summer vacation and between semesters. The last teaching day is likely to be around the end of May 2009. The majority of paid vacation will likely be taken after the end of regular teaching in May.
The family have a second home in Switzerland and spend time there, particularly in Winter. It is expected that the Tutor will join the family on these and any other trips, providing they take place outside of designated vacation time. When travelling, the Client will be responsible for all the Tutor’s expenses.
Accommodation, Commuting, and Fees
The family will provide a monthly allowance to cover the costs for the Tutor’s travel from the apartment to the workplace and back during the working week. For a variety of reasons, it is practically impossible for a non-Chinese national to get a Chinese driving license. Consequently the Tutor will need to use public transport or a bicycle to get around outside work hours.
To attract a suitable candidate to this demanding and rewarding position, the client is prepared to offer an exceptional level of remuneration.
