The family of an compassionate, intelligent young woman, aged 14, seek the an exceptional homeschooling Tutor with a breadth of subject knowledge. The role, commencing as soon as possible and potentially lasting for several years, will involve some travel but will predominantly take place in southern New Jersey east of Philadelphia.
Application deadline: Monday, December 15, 2025

The Student

Currently entering 9th grade, the student is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers who have finished university. She is kind-hearted, sociable, and easily picks up new ideas in conversation. She has attended traditional American schools thus far, and has not yet experienced a homeschooling environment. During recent school years, she faced difficulties with anxiety, and as a result missed a good deal of school time due to absences related to those difficulties.

The student’s hobbies have included golfing, boxing, and cosmetology. She has been training for boxing for some time now, although typically that training is for technique and physical fitness. She has not yet started sparring. Her father has a parallel affection for jujitsu, and she enjoys the fact that they participate in these martial sports. Golfing serves both fitness and leisure goals. She very much enjoys time on the golf course, and if she could start multiple mornings per week golfing nine holes, she would jump at the opportunity. She also very much enjoys makeup, hairdressing, and fashion, although these are more likely to continue as hobbies rather than to become career paths.

Academically, the student is very intelligent, but has faced challenges performing in a school environment primarily due to her anxiety. Due to absenteeism in past years, she missed out on substantial portions of math, science, and Spanish language classes. She has made much progress in coping with her anxieties, but they still pose a challenge to her from time to time in daily life. It is anticipated that the one-on-one context of homeschooling with an excellent private Tutor will ameliorate her anxieties surrounding academic work and provide a comfortable environment in which she can explore and excel.

To date, the student has been enrolled in the standard US educational system, following a traditional path of study. The student has a very high EQ. She is very empathetic and understands the thoughts and feelings of those around her. Indeed, her level of sensitivity may be one contributing factor to her anxiety challenges. She tends to reciprocate the energy of her surroundings: a positive energy environment will cause her to open up and be receptive to conversation and education, while a negative dynamic tends to cause her to close and lose academic interest.

The student responds most positively to kind and engaged teachers. Teachers who know how to stay on track to accomplish academic goals and minimize distractions and unrelated unproductive tangents inspire the student to work hard and learn the material. It is especially important due to the student’s previous experiences with anxiety that the Tutor be easy-going and not overly strict, someone who is happy to be an educator. The student’s least favorite teachers have been strict and downright mean. They have chosen favorites among classmates, not concentrated on the material, and give too many tests with too little context and explanation.

Role of the Tutor

The student will best be served by a Tutor who understands both the importance of consistent academic progress and the kindness and patience to explain concepts fully in a way that she can understand. Since she will be starting 9th grade a little late, the Tutor must create an organized and consistent environment of study to get on track for the school year while also avoiding the prospect of a boiler room of academic pressures. Keeping the right balance of lightheartedness and consistency will enable the student not only to catch up in subjects in which she is weak due to her previous school experience, but also energize her in things that might previously not have been her favorite subject areas. Beyond the academic tutoring, the Tutor should be personable, unpretentious and fun, an excellent role-model for this young woman. The student must be made to feel at ease, valued and supported by her Tutor, while likewise being inspired to work hard and succeed in understanding.

For the student to achieve the best possible results, her parents seek a Tutor who will tailor resources and their delivery to address her specific learning needs. In addition, the Tutor must be able to utilize the local environment in order to enrich the educational experience, both in the local environs of New Jersey and when the family travels to other locations. In New Jersey, the family owns a farm. Such a resource could be utilized in the teaching of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and related subjects. While traveling, the Tutor must research the local area in advance to provide educational opportunities that will be enriched by local resources. If they were to travel to Italy, for example, a local cooking class would be an excellent outing; if they go to Pompeii, a combination classical history lesson and vulcanology would enable the student to understand multiple concepts at once.

The ideal Tutor will assist the student in pursuing an asynchronous online school curriculum. The online curriculum will serve as a basis upon which to build the student’s education, and the Tutor will supplement her school curriculum, creating bespoke material and using mechanisms to encourage easier understanding. The student is highly able and has the potential to flourish under the right direction and influence. The student’s extracurricular and cocurricular interests should be integrated into the academic agenda to create a unified whole that serves as much of the student’s purview of interests as possible.

While the family do not necessarily favor a Tutor following a particular political ethos, they do expect their own beliefs and lifestyle to be respected. The family have encountered classroom teachers who seem to have social agendas that they inappropriately include into unrelated teaching of their subjects. As such the Tutor should be discreet regarding their opinions and certainly not bring overly personal matters into the educational arena. When asked what languages the family use, they joked that they speak “English and sarcasm.” A Tutor with a good sense of humor is important.

Solid experience in teaching the American high school curriculum is paramount; applications will not be considered from candidates who have not taught the American curriculum. The Tutor will be innovative in helping to break down and confront any difficulties and ultimately help the student to progress alongside or beyond her peers. The family intend that at the end of her freshman year a return to a traditional school environment should be possible, although it is also possible that homeschooling could continue for all four years of high school. In either eventuality, the Tutor must assure that the student has reached at least appropriate grade level by the end of the 9th grade year.

The student’s parents consider their children to be the most important effort of their lives and the center of their family’s purpose, and the Tutor can expect them to assist actively with the student’s education. They do not intend to micromanage her education, and of course the Tutor will have liberty to direct educational activities, but her parents will always be ready to serve as a resource and help to support the student’s studies.

Hours and Holidays

The right teacher must be energetic and physically fit as they will spend up to 8 hours daily working with the student. They should expect up to 40 hours of contact time per week, with preparation in addition.

The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, but it is essential that they understand the need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and other commitments.

The Tutor will have a minimum of 9 weeks off per annum, to be taken at times agreed upon with the family. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.

Accommodation and Travel

The Client will provide a private, furnished residence for the Tutor within half an hour travel time to their home in New Jersey. The use of a car will be provided, and it is likely that the Tutor may provide transportation to the student as needed for activities.

While no specific travel plans currently exist, it is contemplated that some may occur, especially to destinations that can enrich the educational experience.

Miscellaneous

The tutoring will primarily occur in the family home in New Jersey.

The family have a bulldog and the farm will have animals, so it is important for the Tutor to be comfortable around animals.

The Tutor must be a fit and healthy non-smoker – active and energetic with a love for the outdoors; the kind of person who always makes the most of their environment to enhance teaching and learning opportunities.
