Philadelphia, USA (PHIL-0908)
This position is not currently available.
A full time Tutor is required for the upcoming school year to work with three well-mannered and well-behaved children in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The three children have previously attended private school for several years until last year, when due to an extensive family holiday through Europe, they had their first year of homeschooling. The family wants to continue home school for an indeterminate number of years. The location of their family home is ideal for field trips into the city of Philadelphia or to nearby major cities, such as Washington, DC or New York.

Students

Girl of 12 - The eldest girl is 12 years old and will be starting grade seven in September. During the previous year of homeschooling she made great strides in both her abilities and her confidence in math. She occasionally needs encouragement to take her time and show her work; this is obvious in her rush to complete her seatwork and her care and attention in her math tests. She learns well with the use of math manipulatives.

She has been diagnosed with dyslexia. She often leaves her words incomplete during composition and will frequently write words in the incorrect order. When she reads aloud she will sometimes guess at words or may miss out words that are written down. This past year has greatly improved her ability to slow down and read aloud carefully and she continues to love to read silently. She has excellent oral comprehension and a fantastic memory for details and events.

She also enjoys playing tennis, for which she has lessons several times per week. She loves to cook and bake. She is a very conscientious girl who is concerned about the welfare of everyone around her. She and her brothers love to learn about all types of animals.

Boy of 10 - There is a middle child, a boy of 10. Her first brother is ten years old. He will be starting grade five. In the past year of homeschooling, he managed to complete both the grade four and grade five math curricula, and he will be ready to start the next level in September. He picks up on new mathematical concepts quite quickly and is ready for a challenge in this area.

He also loves to read, and does a terrific job of reading out loud. His oral comprehension is excellent and he is often able to predict correctly the direction that a story is taking. He is somewhat weak in written spelling and grammar. Although he is at grade level in both of these areas, his ideas are often above grade level, but are not effectively communicated because of this weakness. As such, his written answers often tend to be short and matter of fact in order to minimize the amount of writing he is required to complete. When he is presented with the chance to write for pleasure, his stories are expressive, comical, and well developed.

He is very involved with ice hockey, loves all areas of history, and is very thoughtful and reflective across a wide variety of disciplines.

Boy of 8 - The youngest child is eight years old and will be starting grade three. He, like his older brother, excelled in mathematics this previous school year. He completed all of the required grade two curriculum as well as most of grade three concepts. He will need some time to review basic facts, but then will be ready to start the next level of math. He is very good at mental computations and will need continued encouragement to document his work.

He has recently made huge strides in reading and spelling. In the past year, he attended a Wilson summer camp, a Wilson specific school, and had private tutoring from a Wilson certified teacher. This has helped him immensely, and his reading ability has improved drastically. A Tutor who is trained to help in areas of reading would allow him to make another leap this coming year.

He is very active and loves to learn in a handson manner. He is a young boy who is full of positive energy. Like his siblings, he loves to read, play sports, and learn about animals.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will work with all three children to keep them up to date with respect to their peers in the local Philadelphia private schools. At this point it is unknown when, or if, the children will be returning to these schools. The Tutor may also be asked to help with the ordering of school related materials.

The Tutor will also be responsible for the completion of a school related portfolio that documents the childrens various learning activities throughout the school year. The Tutor should be competent in both written and spoken Spanish, as the children will be continuing to build upon their Spanish language skills.

The children may also be completing state wide testing this year, and the Tutor will be responsible to help the children become familiar and comfortable with the state testing format and content.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor will usually work a Monday Friday schedule and spend 4-5 hours each day with the children. Since the children will travel to the Tutors house for school, the Tutor will be asked to provide lunch for the children. The client will cover expenses for lunch.

A fully insured vehicle will be provided for the Tutor and all work-related expenses will be reimbursed. The Tutor will be responsible for all costs arising from their personal use.

Accommodation

The Tutor will live in a lovely house on three acres of land down the street from the family. The house has cable TV and high speed wireless internet. The house is suitable for a couple.

The house has a 2-room classroom and the children will travel to the Tutors residence for school.

The family has two friendly dogs that sometimes spend some time in the fenced backyard of the tutors accommodation.
