New York (NY-0908)
This position is not currently available.
A diversely talented Tutor is required to support the academic progress of a student beginning his high school career at a very competitive school in New York, starting in September 2008.

Student

The student in question is a fourteen-year-old son of an Upper East Side New York family. He will be entering the ninth grade at a new school next year. The school is very highly ranked in the United States, and the academic challenge to him is expected to be significant. He has great academic potential, but needs to be encouraged to develop that potential by a Tutor who knows how to motivate teenaged boys. His listening skills are very good, but from time to time he has a difficulty with reading comprehension and putting his thoughts into an organized written structure. He also tends to think that he knows subject areas very well, when in fact he needs further work to gain the mastery that he needs.

He enjoys sports very much, and is especially talented in Tennis, Basketball, and Lacrosse. He loves console-based computer games and technology. He also has a strong affection for the sciences, and often seeks out discussions on extracurricular science and mathematics topics, showing an active mind and strong intellectual potential. He is very kind and generous, and appreciates the efforts of others on his behalf. He has typical teenaged foibles, but is a true joy to work with.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor must have strong abilities in advanced mathematics, North Atlantic history, biology, chemistry, and English literature and grammar. The Tutor must also be fluent in French.

The family are highly energetic and conversational individuals with strong opinions. The Tutor must be able to converse and respond appropriately with family members, to be accommodating of opinions different from his own, and to engage high-spirited discussions in the positive light in which they are intended. The family are very tolerant of many points of view, and expect the Tutor to be tolerant and unflappable.

From time to time, the family will travel, and the Tutor will often be expected to accompany them.

The family already have a Tutor in place who has worked extensively with the student, and who will remain next year to work with his younger brother. This Tutor will happily assist the new Tutor wherever possible.

Hours and Holidays

Normal hours will be five days a week for several hours each day. The Tutor will work with the student on Sundays and four days a week when he arrives home from school. That arrival time is often variable due to sports and other activities, so the Tutor must be flexible about those hours.

From time to time, the Tutor will also need to work on an occasional Saturday to support tests and important writing assignments occurring early in the next week, for which the Tutor will receive additional compensation.

Standard holiday allowance of nine weeks paid holiday per annum applies.

Accommodation and Travel

The client will provide a furnished apartment near the family home in Manhattan. The client will cover all bills, with the exception of food and personal telephone charges. The client will provide meals that occur during the tutoring time.

The client will cover the cost of the first outward and final return journeys only.

If the client wishes to take the tutor with them when they travel, the client will be responsible for all expenses of the tutor.
