A qualified, competent, and responsible educator is required to work as Tutor for two children. The tutoring will be based initially in the US and then in London, and may include periods of travel to the Switzerland and to other locations. This appointment is for a minimum of 12 months starting from August 2009.
Students
There are two students, a boy age 12 and in 7th grade, and a girl age 10 and in 5th grade.
The children are polite, engaging, active, intelligent, and interested young people. They are gregarious and sociable; they enjoy travel and new experiences. They love music and are learning the piano. They speak English, French, and German at home and at school. They enjoy playing sports, especially soccer, and visiting museums. The boy is a voracious reader, enjoys watching films and spending time with his friends. The girl likes art and music (especially hip hop), is independent, sporty, and has lots of friends.
The Tutor
The children are currently enrolled at an international school in Zurich. From August 2009 they will be home-schooled while they travel with their parents in the US (mainly New York and Los Angeles), and will then continue their education at an international school in London from January 2010.
The children are keen students who receive excellent school reports. A Tutor is being sought to work after school with the children, to provide educationally relevant, fun, and engaging activities that enhance their learning in the afternoons and early evenings and to keep their young minds stimulated. The school day is long. On most days they also have after-school activities. The Tutor should expect to coordinate plans to fit around these activities, and also should expect to assist in transportation and practical organization. Plans can change at short notice. Apart from some light homework help, the emphasis on this role is enhancement rather than formal tutoring. The Tutor will obviously therefore need to be empathetic, flexible, and adaptable.
During term there are some weekdays without school. On these days the Tutor will have longer hours with the children, and will be able to take the children on field trips to places of interest nearby.
The ideal Tutor will have many interests and will be able to help the children across the academic spectrum. He will ideally play a musical instrument, preferably the piano, and speak English and French. German would also be an advantage. The Tutor should also enjoy outdoor sports activities such as soccer. It is essential that the Tutor have a driving license.
The Tutor should be a non-smoker, and not be allergic to cats. He will need to be highly IT literate, intelligent, well read and up-to-date on current affairs, world business and the media arts. The Tutor will need to possess copious amounts of with-it-ness. He will need to be sporty and highly organised.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
There are two modes to this position: home-schooling and after-school tuition.
For the home-schooling part, the Tutor will follow the general outline of a typical school day, making sure that the children stay on a par with their peers at their new school in London. This will require liaison with the school. The Tutor should also endeavour to make good use of the local environment to facilitate and enhance the learning experience and to make sure that this short inter-school diversion is something wonderful the children can remember for the rest of their lives.
When the role becomes that of an after-school Tutor from January 2010, the Tutor will typically start at 3pm when he arrives at the Client’s home. He will then have 4-5 hours, until dinner time with the children. One evening per week the Tutor may be asked to stay in the house throughout the night in loco parentis. This will involve cooking with the children putting them to bed that evening and waking them the next morning.
The Tutor will be entitled to weekends off, and the standard nine weeks paid vacation per annum.
The Client will be responsible for the full expenses of the Tutor arising from any travel required for the position throughout the contract term.
A car, or suitable alternative arrangements, will be provided for the Tutor in all locations.
Accommodation, Fees, and Miscellaneous
A fully furnished apartment will be provided for the Tutor. When travelling with the family, suitable separate accommodation will be provided for the Tutor at all times.
Except where the tutoring runs through meal times the Tutor should expect that it will not always be appropriate to have their meals with the family.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the likelihood of extension if the family are pleased with the progress of the children. The salary will be set at £54,000 GBP.
