Stockport, Cheshire (MAN-0109)
This position is not currently available.
A full time tutor is required for 3 months from 12th January 2009 to home educate two lovely girls, ages 9 and 7, at their rural home near Stockport, Cheshire.

The two girls have been attending their local, highly academic private school, which is closing permanently at Christmas. Rather than enroll the girls in a new school straight away, their parents feel that the closing of the school has created an opportunity for something special instead of simply continuing on the formulaic track that the local school offered. They desire a highly able, creative, fun, inventive, and energetic Tutor to give their daughters a highly experiential and broadening but nonetheless academically rigorous experience during the transition between schools. If successful, the girls will look back on this short departure from their normal schooling with tremendous fondness and feel that it was a significant event in their lives.

Students

The children are highly intelligent and articulate, engaging and polite. They have a clear sense of who they are and are confident and clear at communicating their interests, their likes, and their dislikes in a warm and pleasant manner. They will be a joy for any educator to work with.

The older girl favours History and she also loves animals, arts and crafts, and music. She is adventurous, and loves to visit zoos and museums. Her least favourite subject is Maths, but in conversation with her and her parents it would seem that her hesitancy in this area is linked to confidence and relevance rather than a blockage of any sort. Her younger sister is fond of music and art. She loves Maths, especially to do with money, and she also likes books, history, drama, and animals. Both girls enjoy swimming, horse riding, and skiing.

Their school has reported some concerns that there may be some mild dyslexia or dyscalculia with both girls. In the older child this affects her spelling and Maths, and in the younger this shows in her reading, and in Maths, questions that involve reading. It should be noted that their previous school performs well above the national average and even in the areas of concern neither of the girls performs below their age group.

Role of the Tutor

There are many layers to this position. On one level it is essential that the girls remain up to date with their peers and, ideally, get ahead of them. It is also imperative that when the girls start their new school, they fit seamlessly into their respective classes so that their studies are not among the many other issues that starting a new school mid year might entail.

One of the strongest reasons for pursuing this opportunity is for the girls to experience a balanced, well rounded, hands on, experiential, and memorable period of education. Although some formal learning time will be necessary, as will some homework when practice of more difficult skills is required, the majority of the assignment should not be classroom based. Instead, the Tutor will need to become familiar with all that the local area and Manchester city itself have to offer, and to make full use of these resources to provide a well structured, engaging, fun, and interesting educational adventure for the girls.

In addition to the teaching role with the girls, the Tutor will be expected to help their parents with the selection of their new school, including making contact with the new class teachers to ensure a smooth integration when the time comes.

It is not known at this stage what timetable will work best, and this will be one of the first tasks that the Tutor will need to decide. This timetable will need to be developed in partnership with the girls and their parents to make sure that all elements of the position are covered, making time for parental involvement, and making allowance for social opportunities with children of similar age. For example, it may be that the Tutor arranges for the girls to get involved in some kind of local charity work, or prepares learning materials for parents to complete with their children and perhaps with their friends during the weekend.

The Tutor will need to keep detailed records of the curriculum and the progress through this curriculum, including assessment opportunities, for each child during the assignment. These records will be available to the Client at all times for their review and suggestions.

Hours and Holidays

This is a full time position. The Tutor will be expected to work a full 35 hour week with weekends off. These hours include preparation time.

This position is for three months and may be extended until the end of the summer term. The Tutor will be entitled to 9 weeks pro rata paid vacation. In a 3-month contract, this is 11 working days.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

Fully furnished and pleasant accommodation with all modern conveniences including high speed Internet will be arranged and provided by the Client. This will be separate from the family home.

If the Tutor has their own car they will be reimbursed mileage at £0.40 per mile. If they do not have a car, the Client will also make arrangements for one locally throughout their contract, and will cover all expenses involved in the running of this car for work-related purposes, including comprehensive insurance. The Tutor will be responsible for the costs arising from their own personal use of a Client-provided car, including any damage not covered by insurance.

It is possible that the Tutor may travel with the family. If this is the case, the Client will cover all expenses for the Tutor.

The family have a rabbit and a dog, and girls love to ride horses. The Tutor will therefore need to be comfortable around animals.

The position will suit a non-smoker, who leads a healthy lifestyle including taking regular exercise; someone who is fit and youthful.
