The position will commence in September 2009.
Student
He is a charming and polite young man, with a quick wit and dry sense of humour. He has several interests, notably in marine biology, animals (particularly reptiles) and mathematics. He enjoys many sports such as squash, fishing, and swimming. Although he is not competitive, fairness is very important to him.
The Tutor
He will be educated from home in the core subjects of English, Maths, and Science, as well as the humanities of Geography and History. He has been learning Spanish for 2 years and this will also be continued. Particular attention will need to given by the Tutor to his writing skills in English, which are perhaps a little underdeveloped. Of particular emphasis in the immediate term is Maths and Science; he shows most aptitude and interest in these subjects.
It is also expected that some emphasis will be placed on physical education. He likes to cycle and kayak.
Academically, he responds well to close direction, and it is hoped that he will become more of an independent learner as he matures. A dedicated teaching room will be provided in each location where tutoring will take place, but the Tutor should take the opportunity to expand the learning experience for him to include local resources where possible. This could include involvement with other home school groups or programmes within the area.
In addition, the Tutor will need to identify local opportunities for involving him in sports, and to exploit opportunities for him to mix with other young people of his age.
It is envisaged that a typical working week will be 9am 3pm Monday-Friday. Homework will not usually exceed one hour per day for Year 9, but is important in helping him to work independently. Both parents will support the homework and ensure it is completed. The Tutor will need to develop a timetable and curriculum for each subject, as well as suitable assessments to keep track of his progress in comparison to his peers in the UK.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
Nine weeks paid vacation will be available annually. Any additional leave will be subject to agreement between the Tutor and the Client.
The Client will provide travel costs to and from the home of the Tutor as per the Terms of Business.
A car will be provided, or the Tutor may provide his own car if preferred. It is essential that the Tutor holds a clean driving licence.
The maximum stay per year in the US is unlikely to exceed 6 months.
Accommodation, Fees, and Miscellaneous
The Tutor will need to be a non-smoker, and enjoy a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
In Florida and Gibraltar the Tutor will be provided with a furnished apartment a short distance from the family home.
The position is for 12 months initially and may be extended annually by mutual agreement.
