This is a long-term role, ideally lasting several years.
The position starts as soon as possible.
Student
When the boy was a little older than 2, he was diagnosed with focal epilepsy. At first it was thought that this would be treatable, but unfortunately he did not respond well, and the condition developed into general epilepsy. As his conditioned worsened, he was unable to continue at the special school he attended in England, and in August 2006 he was given corpus callosotomy surgery. Although this was completely successful in that it reduced the frequency of fits almost entirely, the resulting limited inter-hemispheric communication has left him much slower and less responsive. He is calm, rarely raises his voice, does not lose his temper, and is not violent.
It has been estimated that he is currently operating around age 6. His father would like it very much if his son could learn to write his own name and to show more enthusiasm for the world around him in general. It is not known to what extent this degree of improvement is possible or over what timescale. At present it takes him some time to respond to someone calling his name, even when he knows that person well, and it is hoped that the tutor/therapist will be able to gradually improve his responsiveness in this respect too.
His first language is English, he likes all forms of music, and he remembers songs. He enjoys films, especially Batman and Spiderman. He also enjoys horse-riding and being outdoors.
