Switzerland (South) (CH-1009)
This position is not currently available.
An excellent Tutor is required as soon as possible to support the home-education of grade 10 boy and to offer some afterschool support or part time home-education to a high school senior. The family is based in southern Switzerland.

Students

The family’s son has just started 10th grade and is studious. He is committed to his work and gets decent grades. He has a pleasant and affable demeanour. He is sociable, and enjoys the company of good friends. When he began school this year he discovered that his social group was no longer as interested in study as he is, and he was uncomfortable joining their extracurricular activities. He now wishes to be home-schooled.

The boy has been enrolled in a fully accredited online high school, and will be able to pursue a course of study at his own pace. This personable and focused student desperately needs the experience of an inspirational teacher, essential at this critical point in his education.

Although a long way off, he is already thinking about University and dreams of taking Engineering or Liberal Arts at one of the best US institutions.

The family’s daughter is in the 12th grade, and is also hard working and capable of excellent grades. She is sociable and has a group of close and loyal friends. The young lady is articulate, highly intelligent and able to construct and communicate cogent and rational arguments with ease. She is active in many extra curricular activities and would very much like to graduate high school with her peers even though there are aspects of her schooling that she does not enjoy. Unfortunately, her junior year tarnished her GPA and this, together with her present SAT score, means that might not be accepted to her first choice of University. With this in mind, she has decided not to apply for University this year, and instead to use the time to make sure that her 12th grade GPA is secure and to ensure that she is fully prepared for this time next year.

The Tutor will help her to restore her GPA to the required level, get the SAT scores that she needs, and render excellent advice about her University application. Instead of starting University in 2010, the current thinking is that she will apply for a PG year at one of the top US boarding schools.

Role and Attributes of the Tutor

The Tutor will work with the boy in a mentor-coach capacity, structuring the home-school day and the ensuring a steady rate of progress through the online materials so that everything is done on time and to the required standard. This will necessarily involve some periods where the Tutor is a teacher, explaining how to solve certain problems or discussing the meaning of texts, and other periods where the Tutor ensures that he is getting on with assignments by himself. Although it is essential that he complete his work himself, the purpose of a full time support Tutor in this role is to ensure that everything is complete and to the highest standard possible. This will mean that all material should be checked by the Tutor. This opportunity to supplement all the gaps in his knowledge and promote the application of that knowledge is one of the most beneficial aspects of this approach to education.

It is envisaged that the Tutor will create a timetable that follows the general structure of the normal school day. This will need to have the flexibility to accommodate one of the advantages of this style of schooling — the flexibility to work longer on a particular subject if desired. The student also needs to learn how to structure his own time and schedule work accordingly by getting ahead to earn breaks for non-school activities.

One of the downsides of home-education is the risk of becoming socially isolated. It is important that the Tutor will help the boy to find social opportunities outside school time, perhaps through sports or volunteer work.

The Tutor will also work with the young woman when she comes home from school, in particular helping with her Calculus and English courses as needed. If she were to take these classes through the online high school, then the Tutor will be responsible for structuring the material to make sure that everything is completed and submitted in the same way that he or she does with the 15-year-old.

The Tutor will need to be patient and calm with both children, yet able to command their respect through his or her own work ethic, subject knowledge, intelligence and lifestyle. While it is not expected that the Tutor will be an expert in all the subjects that the students study, he or she will need to be strong with Math (including Calculus), Sciences, and English. The Tutor will need to have an exemplary academic track record and have done well at high school across the subject range and with the SAT.

Since the course materials are devised and graded by the online school, the Tutor will not be responsible for writing or assessing the course. He or she will have access to the materials via the website and a duplicate set of texts, and will need to make sure that they are well ahead of the student in all courses. This requires someone conscientious and thorough who pays attention to detail and is meticulous with his or her preparation.

Working from home and spending most the day with just one or two students requires an inspirational educator, someone with an immense reserve of creative ideas who can captivate the attention and interests of the students while maintaining a buoyant and productive learning environment.

The Tutor will need to be a non-smoker who leads a fit and active lifestyle.

Hours, Holidays and Travel

The Tutor will normally work with the 15-year-old as per normal school hours, and with his sister after school as required. It will often be possible for the Tutor to do some preparation while the students are studying by themselves, but it is likely that some of the time outside school hours will also be needed, particularly at the start of each new course. The fees reflect this relatively high workload.

The Client will provide a car for the personal use of the Tutor throughout the contract.

In addition to the standard contractual flight provision, the Client has generously offered to include the airfares of the Tutor’s spouse for the same journeys as those for which the Tutor is entitled.

In addition, should the Tutor be invited to join the family in on international travel, the Tutor’s spouse will also be invited and their airfares covered.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous

A delightful, self-contained, detached, fully furnished guesthouse on the grounds of the family home is provided for the duration of this contract. This accommodation would suit a couple.

It is likely that some of the rooms of this guesthouse will be converted into the schoolroom and study for the Tutor.

The family also has homes in other countries, and accommodation there would be available for the Tutor.

The Tutor will be entitled to the standard minimum nine weeks paid vacation allowance per annum.

If necessary, Tutors International will negotiate on behalf of a successful applicant to mitigate financial consequences entailed by leaving current employment at short notice.
