Ideally the Tutors will be what is considered today to be traditional scholars: educated, intelligent, erudite, familiar with the classics and classical thought, rhetoric and philosophy, and Latin or Greek. In addition, the ideal candidates will be able to cover Spanish and possibly French. It is essential for the Tutors to be able to inspire and to challenge our Client’s children to learn, not only to the standards required to open up the possibility of enrolment in Ivy League or Oxbridge Universities, but also to a lifelong love of the continuous acquisition of knowledge.
This role is wide-ranging, and will suit exceptional educators who can seamlessly interlace the more traditional educational activities with experiential and fun activities, suiting each of the children’s individual characters, into a homogeneous and coherent education, highly organised, well structured and purposeful.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that the scope of this position is limited only by the Tutor’s imagination and resourcefulness.
This position will commence as soon as the ideal candidate has been identified, and will be for 12 months in the first instance.
Students
The brother is a confident and engaging young man with a strong desire to understand all that he encounters. He has an inquisitive mind and strives for perfection. His favourite subjects are Math and Science, and he also enjoys History and Latin. He enjoys the process of learning as much as the knowledge he gains, and he thrives when the opportunity to acquire information is presented within a highly organised framework of clearly expressed purpose and context. He will respond best to a Tutor who challenges him without moving too far from his comfort zone in any single step. He is a highly concrete learner and finds his most significant challenges in organising his thoughts, especially in writing and verbal presentation. The Tutor will therefore need to maintain a warm and highly supportive framework with plenty of encouragement in these areas. His interests outside school are wide ranging, and include golf, tae-do, chess, computers, travel and astronomy.
The sister is a thoughtful young lady who loves English literature, acting, and drama. She would like to learn French or Spanish, and her increasing confidence with Mathematics has demonstrated that she is more than capable of applying herself in this subject with considerable success. She responds best to Tutors with whom she can relate and share experiences, and it is therefore essential the Tutor share some of her interests. She is a keen horseback rider and regularly wins Champion at shows. She also likes to travel, and playing with her dog.
The Tutoring Role
Until recently, the children were taught following a US curriculum, but have now changed to the UK system and are preparing for a wide range of IGCSEs and GCSEs. The subjects being taught cover the full range of a normal private school and include the three sciences, mathematics, humanities, English and Spanish. The family is considering building a small, well-resourced science lab that the Tutors would be responsible for stocking and maintaining. Regular meetings with parents will be required to ensure that all is running smoothly and that progress is in keeping with the Client’s expectations.
The Tutors will need to remain flexible, with a youthful adaptability, but without any loss of discipline to accommodate the parent’s organic, fluid schedule. This can often mean that the children’s plans may change at short notice, and that the Tutors will need to be all the more structured and organised, and ensure that the children are kept well informed of their progress and progression. It is also essential that the children be given time to practice difficult skills, either during class or after school, and that constant relevant assessment is carried out in order to provide the kind of reassurance that normally comes from working with in atmosphere where there is opportunity for peer comparison.
There is a dedicated schoolroom, which is well equipped, and the Tutor will be responsible for ensuring that this remains organized and properly resourced. The Tutor should expect Sundays, and either Saturday or Monday off each week, and will need to be flexible in this regard. Meals occurring during teaching times will be taken with the family.
The post carries with an opportunity to extend the teaching beyond the classroom, through local and more distant excursions to locations of interest that fit into the curriculum — it makes more sense to study the Egyptians in Egypt than from a textbook! Such educational travel will need to be planned carefully in advance and with the approval of the Client. Since the opportunity for these educationally oriented travel programs will usually occur during the standard school vacation times, the Tutors should expect to have to take their own vacations at non-standard times.
It is not essential that the Tutors should personally be capable of delivering all the teaching subjects themselves; should a particular subject specialist be required it will be the responsibility of the Tutors to ensure that these arrangements fit into the educational schedule.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutors should expect to travel with the family several times a year, for a few weeks at a time. At these times the Client will cover all expenses for the Tutor.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
The Client will also make arrangements for a car for the personal use of both Tutors to get to and from their apartment to their place of work. This car is also available to both Tutors for local journeys within the Atlanta area. The Tutors will be responsible for the costs arising from their own personal use, and for any damage they cause and which is not covered by insurance.
The family are active Christians whose commitment to their faith plays a central role in their lives. While it is not a requirement that the Tutors be of any particular faith, it is essential they are sympathetic, sensitive, and open-minded, and certainly have no agenda of their own in this regard.
The family have a dog, and their daughter rides horses. The Tutor will therefore need to be comfortable around animals.
A non-smoker who leads a healthy lifestyle including taking regular exercise is preferred. Complete fluency in English is a pre-requisite. This position would suit a man or woman, single or married, and all ages, races and nationalities will be considered.
Candidates who are able to complete a trial period of 1-3 weeks during regular term as part of their interview process are of particular interest to the Client. This is by no means a prerequisite for consideration and interested candidates who are unable to free themselves from their current commitments will not in any way be disadvantaged. Any candidates who are able to complete a trial period will have their full expenses paid by the Client as well as fees of $3000 USD per week. This position is initially for one year, renewable on a yearly basis, for several years.
