A qualified and competent teacher is required to work as a full time Tutor for one young woman. The tutoring will be based primarily in Florida - about an hour inland from Orlando - but may include periods in Switzerland. This appointment is initially for 12 months from the start of September 2008, and may be extended to 18-24 months in total.
Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Student

There is one student, who is 17. She is a lovely young woman, mature and hard working. Despite some dyslexia, she has done well in school. When assessed for its US equivalence, her transcript, at the end of grade 11, will probably equate to a GPA of 3.5-3.7. For the last two months of the 2007-2008 school year, she was training in wakeboarding with a coach while continuing her school work with the help of a Tutor. This arrangement has worked very well, and the family would like to continue to foster her love of and talent for her sport without compromising her educational goals.

The girls strongest school subject is History, and she also likes Art. She has excellent oral French that must be maintained throughout the tutoring assignment. It is not known at this stage what courses she will need to graduate from her online high school program, but it is likely to cover the full range of high school courses at grade 11 or 12, such as Math, History, English, and Biology or Chemistry, including some AP courses, SAT preparation, and college applications.

The young womans own description of her ideal Tutor is someone who leads a healthy lifestyle, highly intelligent, someone passionate about one or more of their interests, and someone who has a strong ability to motivate and to enliven a given topicwanting her to be the best she can be.

Role of the Tutor

The student has been educated in a good private school in Switzerland following the IB system until the end of the 2007-2008 academic year. Although the school allowed her to continue her enrolment, and to take the IB remotely for the last few months of the year, this is not possible in the future.

From September 2008, she will be enrolled in a fully accredited online high school program in the US system, supported by a Tutor, and will need to be prepared for SAT and College entry in either September 2009 or 2010 depending on how preparations and time commitments with her sport evolve.

Since her strongest school subject is History, the Tutor will need to be especially capable in this subject. She and her parents are keen to ensure that History continues to develop through her studies. The change from the IB to the US system should provide plenty of room for interesting discourse with a suitably experienced and knowledgeable Tutor. It would also be ideal if the Tutor were able to support her artistic interest even if the online program does not offer this. Fluency in French is also important.

Hours and Holidays

On a typical work day, the student will arrive at the Tutors home at 9am. She and the Tutor will work until 1pm, and then have lunch together. The Tutor will then take the girl to her training session. Afternoons and evenings will be free for preparation and for the Tutors own pursuits.

The Tutor will be entitled to weekends off, and the standard nine weeks paid vacation per annum.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

A fully furnished condominium will be provided for the Tutor. The Client will cover all standard expenses for this accommodation, including Internet.

If the position should relocate to Switzerland at any time, detached and furnished accommodation will be provided for the Tutor.

A car will be provided for the Tutor both in Florida and in Switzerland. The Client will be responsible for the Tutors full expenses arising from any travel required for the position throughout the contract term.

The location of the assignment is rather isolated, and will suit a Tutor who is comfortable with this and able to keep themself occupied. The position affords the opportunity for an artist or writer to have some quiet space, or for some postgraduate studies in the afternoons and evenings when not preparing material for work with the student.

The Tutor should be a non-smoker, competent with IT, and highly organised.
