Wellington, Florida (WEL 1125.2)
An experienced, energetic and broadly able American Tutor is required to fill a full-time homeschooling role based in several locations including Florida and Connecticut. It is anticipated that the role is likely to continue until the student completes her high school education. This assignment is the start of a long-term homeschooling role that aims to provide mentorship and inspire a love of academia in the student and to provide flexibility for her to travel and proceed with her education alongside her athletic pursuits.
Application deadline: 30 June 2026

The Student

The student is a sophomore (rising junior in Fall 2026) enrolled in an accredited online high school, where she has maintained an A average across an all-honors curriculum. In her sophomore year she is taking two AP courses, and she anticipates a demanding honors and AP program through junior and senior year, including multiple AP Calculus courses. She is a competitive showjumper who trains and competes at a high level, based primarily in Florida for much of the school year (November through April). In the remainder of the year she is either based in Connecticut or travelling to competitions (including internationally). Online schooling was chosen specifically to accommodate this lifestyle, and it has served her well academically. The role of a full-time tutor is to help her continue to excel in a rigorous curriculum while managing the pressures of elite sport — time, energy, focus, and the mental demands that come with competing at that level. In addition, a master's-level writing ability is desired.

She engages most readily through conversation and direct explanation rather than textbooks or dense written material. Face-to-face and verbal instruction is where she absorbs ideas most effectively. Video formats are also useful. Developing strategies to work through complex readings more efficiently will be an important part of her academic preparation, particularly as AP coursework increases in volume and density.

She has a strong aptitude for mathematics and science. In problem-solving, she often finds her own route to an answer, but she benefits from being shown why systematic methods are more reliable across different problem types. She responds to demonstration rather than explanation alone. One area of focus will be building her ability to see the broader structure of a subject, not just solve individual problems in isolation.

Her humanities work has room to grow, particularly analytical writing. Logical structure and argumentative flow in essays need development. She responds well to Socratic discussion as a way of working through ideas, and this approach should be central to humanities instruction.

Online school provides weekly rather than daily deadlines, which require strong self-management. It is important to help her build effective task-flow habits — breaking work into manageable steps, avoiding last-minute preparation, and maintaining consistent momentum alongside her training schedule. She works well once she is engaged with a task; the challenge is in the structure and initiation of work, not in the work itself. Scheduling needs to flex around training, competitions, and travel.

She holds herself accountable to adults she respects, and she gives that respect to people she finds competent, fair, and genuinely invested in her progress. She responds well to positive reinforcement, a sense of humor, and an energetic teaching style. She does not respond well to condescension. Gamification and challenge-based learning engage her effectively.

Beyond academics and riding, she has interests that a good tutor can draw on: she enjoys strategy games, escape rooms, and social deduction games; she follows soccer and Formula One; and she has a love of animals. One of the distinctive opportunities this role offers is the ability to connect academic subjects to the places and experiences her lifestyle brings — a tutor with curiosity and creativity will find a lot to work with.

Role of the Tutor

The family intends for the student to complete a rigorous high school curriculum through her accredited online high school, culminating in an accredited diploma. They are seeking an experienced homeschooling professional who can deliver the full range of the American curriculum at an honors and AP level, with strong subject competency across mathematics, sciences, and humanities. The academic trajectory includes AP Calculus, honors sciences, humanities, and likely economics. The Tutor must also have demonstrated experience in SAT/ACT preparation and university admissions, with a clear understanding of what is required for applications to top-tier institutions. Looking ahead, the Tutor will play an active role in guiding the student through standardized testing preparation and the university application process. The student has been assessed for learning differences; there is some indication of attention deficit alongside executive functioning challenges, and the Tutor should have experience working effectively with students who present these profiles. In addition, it is extremely important that the Tutor should have a high level of demonstrable writing ability.

The student's foreign language of choice is Spanish, and applications from candidates with Spanish fluency will be given preference.

The Tutor must be thoroughly prepared, organized, and disciplined in their own work as a condition of holding the student to the same standard. Lessons should be planned thoughtfully, making creative use of the immediate environment — integrating classroom work with outdoor settings, hands-on study, and practical sessions where the subject matter allows. Given the travel schedule, the Tutor should have the curiosity and initiative to draw on different locations as a resource rather than treating them as an inconvenience.

The Tutor should be able to explain complex concepts clearly and directly, and to maintain the student's engagement across a demanding academic load. Strong communication skills are essential, as is a firm-but-fair approach that keeps academic work on track without being inflexible.

The showjumping competition schedule introduces genuine variability into the academic calendar. The Tutor must be comfortable working within this reality — planning ahead for multiple scheduling scenarios, ensuring that deadlines are not missed, and adapting when circumstances change. It is important to recognize that competition days can be emotionally intense, with results that affect mood and focus in ways that are not always predictable. The Tutor should be able to read the situation and adjust the academic plan accordingly, without losing sight of overall progress and targets.

The Tutor should expect to act in loco parentis when the student's parents are absent, and must be comfortable taking on those responsibilities, including staying overnight with the student when required.

Beyond academics, the Tutor will serve as a positive and consistent adult presence in the student's life. Building a relationship of genuine mutual respect is central to this role. The student holds herself accountable to adults she trusts, and the Tutor's ability to earn and maintain that trust will underpin everything else. Part of the mentorship role involves helping the student develop a longer-term perspective on effort and reward — understanding that meaningful results in both academic and competitive pursuits are the product of sustained work over time. The Tutor should bring both empathy and professionalism to this aspect of the role, maintaining appropriate boundaries while being a genuinely supportive presence.

Hours and Holidays

This is a full-time position. The Tutor must be able to respond flexibly to the client’s requirements in terms of availability and working time. The Tutor should expect to be working with the student for at least 40 hours per week, and to fit their preparation time in during personal time as needed. The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week as a weekend, although these days may not be Saturday and Sunday. However, given the nature of the position, the Tutor should be prepared to adapt their plans to suit the Client’s requirements. Advanced notice will be given when possible. The Tutor is entitled to a minimum of nine weeks (45 working days) paid vacation per annum. The dates for this will be at times convenient for the Client. Although they are likely to mirror the usual seasonal breaks, they will not necessarily follow the pattern of school terms and holidays. Any two day “weekend” days that are occupied by professional activities will add to the 45-day entitlement.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

Fully furnished accommodation with all modern conveniences including high speed Internet will be provided by the Client separate from their residence in their primary location, whether Florida or Connecticut. It is not known at this stage what the accommodation arrangements will be for the Tutor at other locations when attending horse shows, but the Client is mindful of the need for appropriate privacy and security, and for creating a suitable working environment.

When the surrounding environment is appropriate, the Client will make arrangements for a car for both personal and professional use of the Tutor and will cover all expenses involved in the running of this car for work-related purposes, including comprehensive insurance. The Tutor will be responsible for the costs arising from their own personal use of the vehicle.

The Tutor should expect to travel with the family. During all travel, the Client will cover all travel-related expenses for the Tutor including accommodation, apart from personal meals, and the tuition should continue irrespective of the location.

The Tutor will be physically fit and healthy, a non-smoker. The successful applicant for this role will live a healthy lifestyle and be a positive role model, not only in academic matters, but also as an all-round adult. Fluency in Spanish would be helpful. The Tutor must be comfortable around animals, especially horses and dogs.
