The family have two children: an eight-year-old, and a four-year-old. Both children have been homeschooled since the outset of their education, following a carefully planned Montessori approach alongside elements of the local curriculum. Their parents remain fully committed to homeschooling and have no current plans to pursue traditional schooling.

The older child is a delightful, exceptionally polite, and highly independent young girl. She has developed an impressive ability to organize her own learning, routinely planning her day independently by selecting activities, establishing priorities, and working through them with only occasional guidance from an adult. She demonstrates maturity beyond her years, enjoys engaging in thoughtful conversations with adults, and possesses a natural curiosity about the world around her. She is academically capable, motivated, and accustomed to taking ownership of her own learning within a carefully prepared environment.

The younger child is four years old and already demonstrates remarkable focus and enthusiasm for learning. Although naturally more concrete in his thinking than his older sister, he approaches new activities with confidence and eagerness. He enjoys demonstrating what he has learned and takes genuine pride in his achievements without becoming competitive. Like his sister, he has benefited from a highly structured Montessori environment from an early age and is already developing strong early literacy and numeracy skills.

Both children are exceptionally well-mannered, respectful, and a pleasure to spend time with. They eat meals together as a family, happily eat a wide variety of foods without fuss, interact positively with one another, and display a level of self-control and maturity rarely seen in children of their age. They enjoy meaningful conversations, practical activities, reading, music, and independent exploration. Their parents have created a calm, ordered home environment with very limited screen exposure; the children have watched only a handful of films and have virtually no experience of television, social media, or electronic entertainment. Books, conversation, practical activities, and imaginative play form the foundation of their daily lives.

The family's educational philosophy places mastery above pace. The children are encouraged to achieve complete understanding before progressing to new material, rather than moving forward with only partial knowledge. There are currently no ambitions centered around examinations, elite university admissions, or particular careers. Instead, the family's aspiration is to raise happy, knowledgeable, thoughtful, resilient, and capable young people who can think critically, communicate effectively, solve problems independently, and ultimately pursue whichever path in life proves meaningful to them.

Alongside their academic studies, both children are learning piano and violin. The family is also keen for them to continue learning Spanish, although they remain open to other modern languages should the successful Tutor bring additional strengths.

The family are deeply committed Christians whose faith underpins family life, daily routines, and their approach to raising their children. The children are actively involved in their local church community, and the family wishes their education to reinforce, rather than merely accommodate, their Christian values.

The successful Tutor will assume responsibility for planning, delivering, and continually refining a bespoke educational program for both children. The role is not simply to teach individual subjects, but to curate an exceptional learning environment in which the children can continue developing independence, curiosity, discipline, and intellectual confidence.

The family wishes to continue building upon the Montessori foundations established over recent years. The Tutor should therefore have a thorough understanding of Montessori principles or be genuinely committed to embracing them. The emphasis is on carefully prepared learning environments, thoughtfully sequenced materials, and allowing the children increasing ownership of their own education while providing guidance precisely when it is needed.

Organization will be central to the role. The Tutor must prepare lessons and learning materials meticulously, ensuring that every activity is fully resourced, logically presented, and capable of being completed without unnecessary frustration. Great care should be taken in maintaining an orderly classroom environment, managing educational resources, and planning the children's progression through increasingly challenging concepts in small, carefully controlled stages.

The family is not working towards any particular examination or prescribed academic destination. Instead, the Tutor will be expected to ensure genuine mastery across all areas of learning. Academic progress should never come at the expense of deep understanding, intellectual curiosity, or enjoyment. The Tutor should feel comfortable drawing selectively from Montessori materials, the local curriculum, and other high-quality educational resources to create the most appropriate program for each child.

Reading should remain one of the cornerstones of the children's education. The Tutor will foster a lifelong love of books, literature, and knowledge, while continuing to develop strong literacy skills through meaningful discussion, rich vocabulary, storytelling, and carefully selected reading material. Equally important will be nurturing articulate communication and encouraging the mature, thoughtful conversations that already form such an enjoyable part of family life.

As the children mature, the Tutor will also play an increasingly important role in developing ambition, resilience, determination, perseverance, and purpose. The parents are conscious that their children are growing up in an exceptionally privileged environment and want them to develop the internal motivation and character necessary to pursue meaningful goals for their own sake rather than through external necessity. The Tutor should therefore seek opportunities to encourage challenge, persistence, and satisfaction in accomplishment while respecting the family's relaxed and pressure-free approach to education.

The family would welcome a Tutor who can contribute to the children's wider development through music, languages, practical life skills, and cultural enrichment. The children are currently learning piano and violin, and the family remains interested in Spanish while being open to other languages depending on the successful candidate's expertise. It is not a requirement that the Tutor can offer any instrument or language though as these can be taught by local tutors.

Above all, the Tutor must be an active participant in the family's educational philosophy and values. The Tutor should feel entirely comfortable participating in the family's routines, including saying grace before meals and supporting the children's involvement in their church community. Indeed, one facet of the role involves the Tutor needing to lead a weekly morning classroom of 7-10 children from the family's church group. Some of the curriculum is provided in place but arts/crafts are to be curated by the Tutor.

The Tutor should integrate naturally into the household, working collaboratively with the parents while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. Included in this is the need for high standards of privacy such that the Tutor posts nothing about their work on social media, does not share photos without the Client's knowledge and permission, and does not use their own phone (or tablet, laptop etc) in front of the children.

The right Tutor must be energetic and physically fit as they will spend up to eight hours daily working and learning alongside the children. They should expect an average of 40 hours of contact time per week, with preparation in addition.

The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, although flexibility will be required to accommodate family commitments where necessary.

The Tutor will receive a minimum of nine weeks' holiday per annum, to be taken at times agreed with the family. The Tutor should be prepared to adapt to occasional changes in schedule and will be given as much notice as reasonably possible.

The Client will provide suitable private accommodation in the Washington DC area together with the use of a vehicle.

The family has no current plans for extensive international travel as part of the educational program. While occasional travel may arise, it is expected to be limited. Should travel be required, the Client will provide appropriate private accommodation throughout and will cover all reasonable work-related travel expenses.

The successful candidate will be able to offer considerably more than the minimum requirements of the position and will serve as an outstanding role model for both children. They should be educated, polished, organized, and possess excellent manners, strong personal values, and impeccable professional standards.

The Tutor will be physically fit, healthy, and a non-smoker. They should be calm, patient, and highly self-motivated, with the maturity to work independently while collaborating closely with the parents. Above all, they should genuinely enjoy helping children develop into thoughtful, capable, and compassionate young people.
